How To Optimize Your Podcast For Search With PowerPress
PowerPress includes built-in features that can help improve the discoverability of your podcast across search engines like Google, AI-powered search experiences, and podcast directories such as Apple Podcasts.
While PowerPress provides helpful technical SEO tools, podcast discovery today also depends on strong metadata, useful episode pages, clear titles, and detailed show notes or transcripts.
To enable Podcasting SEO features in PowerPress, go to PowerPress Settings → Feeds → Podcasting SEO.
Optimize Your Podcast Episode Titles
One of the most effective ways to improve discoverability is to use different titles for your website and your podcast feed.
- Your web page title can be written for website SEO and human readers.
- Your podcast feed title is what podcast apps and directories use for episode display.
This gives you more control over how your content appears in search engines and podcast apps.
Specify Custom Episode Titles For Podcast Feeds
Enable this option to create custom episode titles for your podcast feed items.
You can choose from three title formats:
- Feed episode title replaces post title (recommended)
- Feed episode title prefixes post title (advanced)
- Feed episode title appended to post title (advanced)
Example: Prefixing
Post Title: How to Boil Water
Episode Title: Cooking 005
The episode will appear in podcast apps and directories as:
Cooking 005 How to Boil Water
Example: Appending
Post Title: How to Boil Water
Episode Title: Cooking 005
The episode will appear in podcast apps and directories as:
How to Boil Water Cooking 005
Append Your Show Title To Episode Titles
In many podcast apps, episodes and shows are indexed separately. Appending your show title to your episode titles may help users recognize the connection between the episode and the overall podcast.
Only use this option if your show title is not already included in your post titles or episode titles. If it is already there, repeating it can make titles look cluttered.
Schema Markup Options
PowerPress can add Schema.org markup to your episode pages. This can help search engines and other systems better understand the content on the page.
Enable AudioObject Markup
Enable this option to include Schema.org AudioObject markup on your episode pages.
AudioObject markup is not currently a Google rich result type on its own, but it can still help provide useful context about your audio content to search engines and other platforms that read structured data.
It is generally safe to enable this option.
Enable VideoObject Markup
Enable this option to include Schema.org VideoObject markup on your web page HTML.
This option is useful when your episode page includes a real, playable video. Google supports VideoObject markup for video discovery, but your page still needs to meet general video indexing requirements. For example, the page should include a playable video, a valid thumbnail, and be publicly accessible.
If you do not publish video episodes, this setting is not necessary.
How Google Finds Podcast Content
Google does not rely on a single special “podcast data type” for discovery. Instead, it evaluates a combination of signals, including:
- Your podcast RSS feed
- Your episode page title
- Your show notes and page copy
- Your headings and internal links
- Your metadata and structured data
- Your transcripts, when available
For better search visibility, focus on creating useful, keyword-relevant content around each episode, not just the feed itself.
Transcripts And Search Visibility
Transcripts can improve discoverability because they give search engines more text to understand what your episode is about.
If you publish transcripts on your site or make them part of your episode workflow, they can help support visibility for topic-based searches, long-tail searches, and AI-powered search summaries.
Transcripts should be accurate, readable, and relevant to the actual audio content.
Apple Podcasts Search Optimization
PowerPress includes features that can help optimize your show for discovery within Apple Podcasts.
Enable this option to:
- Highlight fields that are important for Apple Podcasts optimization
- Enable the Author field and Subtitle field when editing episodes
- Turn on the Enhanced iTunes Summary feature
- Provide suggestions for show-level metadata
Accurate metadata can help your podcast appear in relevant searches within Apple Podcasts. Your title, author name, description, category choices, and episode-level metadata should all accurately describe your content.
